Abstract: The expansion of renewable energy sources connected in low and medium voltage networks, especially of photovoltaic sources, requires the development of some specific solutions for the voltage control in the connection point of these energy sources. Due to the specific nature of the solar energy source, the voltage in the connection point, especially when connecting to medium and low voltage lines, can present significant and fast variations that could lead to significant damages to the users supplied from that line. To limit these effects, the present normative documents require connecting the photovoltaic installations with installed power over 5 MW directly to the medium voltage substation bars, and for lower power installations it is necessary to make calculations for finding the voltage variations caused by changes in the power generated by the source, so that the voltage in the connection point does not vary by more than 5% of the rated voltage. For users with sensitive receivers, the voltage variation determined by the volatility of renewable sources is not acceptable and solutions for keeping the voltage within limits suitable for the user should be analyzed. The paper proposes a solution of UPQC (Unified Power Quality Conditioner) type to compensate the voltage variations and to provide an actually constant voltage at the terminals of the users with sensitive receivers. The experimental study performed for the developed installation emphasized good response characteristics both in normal and disturbed operating conditions. Results of the experimental study are presented and the main technical characteristics of the achieved installation are highlighted. Given that voltage variation at the terminals of end users in schemes with renewable energy sources is unpredictable, the use of an automatic voltage regulator allows ensuring the necessary power quality conditions for sensitive users
