Abstract: For many projects the improvement of the soil is required over a great thickness, considering the increase of the bearing capacity of the foundation soil in order to support the construction loads, to eliminate the collapse potential of the loess deposits and to limiting general and differential settlement, etc. To achieve these requirements, it is necessary to improve the soil with a grid of concrete vertical displacement inclusions. Between the slab of the structure and the improved soil is constructed a transfer layer of compacted material which ensures the distribution of the loads, the support of the loads between the inclusions and also between the inclusions and the soil, a relative uniform distribution of the loads in depth, etc. The concrete is injected from the drilling tool during its withdrawal by rotation. The concrete is injected with a pressure of approximately 5 bars, so the head of the drilling tool is always immersed in concrete. The concrete is transported to the site with a concrete truck and then pumped into the borehole. The typical diameter of an inclusion is 40 cm which ensures the required structural resistance. The cross section is circular and it can have constant or variable diameter, obtaining a profiled section. The inclusions are placed at about to 2 m distance, resulting about 4 m2/inclusion. The transfer layer reduces considerably the shear forces, thus the inclusions can be made from simple concrete (without steel reinforcement). This technology of ground improvement can be applied for direct foundations of various constructions such as: wind converters, storage structures, buildings, platforms, waste water treatment plants, embankments, etc. The process does not require extraction of soil which is an additional advantage when dealing with polluted sites. Also there are no vibrations which can influence the adjacent constructions and the workers. Thus, the concrete inclusions are organic and durable over time.
